My study is sociological research on food, eating and agriculture.
■ Summary of research
I studied social issues in the modern world from the perspective of food. Food includes not only the food and foodways, but also the interactions of people who make and consume it, the rules governing how to eat, and the systems of production, processing and distribution. Food culture is formed by mixing various factors such as the history of the country or area, interaction with different cultures, and political and social resources mobilized by ethnicities and nationalities. I have been studying food as a place where these social entangled elements.
My research is based on sociological cultural theory and qualitative and quantitative social research. As a qualitative social research, I write a monograph on ethnicity that focuses on the food culture of foreigners living in Japan and immigrants who cross borders, and analyze nationalism in food as a cultural heritage. As part of my quantitative social research, I conduct social stratification research that conducts multivariate analysis of the relationship between food choices and income or educational background. I also conduct food policy research based on the political economy of food and agriculture. I also study interdisciplinary food research (food studies) to explore research methods to clarify the relationship between food and society and culture, and conduct theoritical research that examines findings from empirical research from a sociophilosophical perspective.
■ Direction of future research
I have been studying food research disciplines with humanities and social science researchers. I would like to continue clarifying food and social issues from a multifaceted approach. I am also interested in practical activities that link food and agriculture. I hope to develop interdisciplinary network to cooperate for the promotion of food research.

■これまでの研究の概要
主に社会学に準拠しつつ、文化人類学、経済学も援用し、現代世界の社会文化の問題について、食という観点から分析・考察する研究を行っています。食は、食べ物・食べ方だけでなく、それを作り消費する人びとの行為、食べ方を規定する規範、生産・加工・流通のシステムまで含みます。食文化はその食の営まれる国・地域の歴史、異なる文化との相互作用、エスニック・ナショナルに動員される政治・社会的資源など、さまざまな要素が混じりあって形成されます。私はこうした社会的要素の絡み合う場所としての食を研究してきました。研究の手法としては、社会学・文化人類学の理論と質的な社会調査・フィールドワークや計量データの多変量解析に基づく研究を進めています。同時に、食と社会・文化の関係を明らかにするための研究手法を探求するための学際的食研究(フードスタディーズ)や、実証的な調査から得られた知見を社会哲学的に考察する理論研究も行っております。これまでの研究は、「食の多文化化・多民族化をめぐる社会人間学的研究」 「食と社会階層・格差に関する計量社会学的研究 」「食と社会の関係を探求する社会調査・研究方法の学際的開発」「食と農の社会学および食事の社会学に関する社会理論的研究」「現代日本社会におけるフードスタディーズの展開可能性の検討」といったテーマに大別されます。
■今後の研究の方向性
学生時代から人文社会科学の研究者たちと領域横断的に食研究について学んできました。引き続き、多角的なアプローチから食と社会の問題を明らかにしていきたいと思います。また食と農をつなぐ実践活動にも関心があります。今後は食につながるさまざまな研究者・専門家の学際ネットワークを食研究を志す人びとの互助へと発展できればと考えています。
